When I look back to the beginning of this semester in College Composition, all I can remember is the overwhelming feeling of being a horrible writer. I was never the type of person to get unacceptable grades on writing assignments but I never really excelled and I never really felt comfortable. Throughout this semester, I have learned to not be afraid of writing. I have learned to budget my time when I know I have anywhere from 150 words to 8 pages to write. I originally took this class only because it was required to go on to a PA program. Now I’m glad I took it because it was helpful to me personally.

The looming fear I used to have, the feeling in my gut that I would never figure out what to write, is now nearly gone. My favorite assignment this year was Essay 1. I was happy to be able to write about a personal experience and still give it meaning to others. I’ve always liked telling stories, just not writing them. Essay 1 made it easy for me to express myself creatively and also to make a solid point about homelessness and appreciating how fortunate we are.

The most difficult assignment was Essay 3. Having to find the time to figure out which controversial issue was important enough for me to write about, find the supporting research, write my thoughts, document the facts, and make it all sound good was really hard for me. Especially with the added classes that I started in the second half of the semester, time management became a problem. However, I somehow did it! Thinking back on my original fears of writing failures, I have learned that it’s not as scary as it seems. As long as I give myself enough time and plan correctly, I am capable of writing a halfway decent or even interesting essay.

I enjoyed the way this class was organized with peer reviewing. It helped me to read the work of others and give my own critique. It helped even more to hear the opinions and encouragement of my classmates concerning my own work. I think the reason most people don’t like writing is

because they are afraid of it. Hearing your classmates tell you they enjoyed reading your paper, or they couldn’t wait to get to the end makes you want to write more often and share with more people.

Participating in this class has made me much more aware of the benefits of writing and being able to express your thoughts and opinions to others. I have been a dancer for my whole life and have always been amazed to have the ability to express thoughts and emotions through movement. I now feel that I am proficient in expression through words. Thanks Prof Marits!!
